Latterly it has been referred to as the Manor of Wimbledon, after the manorial residence was transferred in 1547 from Mortlake to Wimbledon. The Manor of Mortlake was given by King Edward the Confessor to the See of Canterbury. At the reformation it was returned to King Henry VIII in exchange for other estates. It was then held by various people until its purchase by Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. In 1744 she gave it to the Earl Spencers. In 1880 the common was sold to a number of Gentlemen Residents for £2500. As part of this arrangement a further £1000 was paid to the Inns of Court Volunteers to compensate them for the loss of the rifle range (then on the common). These Gentlemen formed themselves into the East Sheen Common Preservation Society Ltd (ESCPS) with the intention of creating a ladies Golf Course on the Common. Over a period of years, public disquiet arose over the management of the Common by ESCPS. As a result the local Authority proposed a scheme certified by the Board of Agriculture and confirmed by Parliament in the Metropolitan Commons (East Sheen) act 1898. Thus the local Authority became responsible for management and regulation of the common (though not the owner). In 1908 the ESCPS gave the common to the National Trust. It was previously known as the Sheen Common Friends Sports and Recreation Association but changed its name in 2015 when it ceased to be a group exclusively representing sporting interests. At that time the group broadened its remit to represent all areas and users of the Common including those interested in sports, the woodlands and the common in general. Membership of the FoSC is open to any person who is interested in the Common and in the work of the FoSC. Membership is currently free of charge. The members of the FoSC have elected a Committee which meets regularly, at least 4 times a year, to conduct the business of the FoSC. The Committee aims to act as a representative body in dealings with the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames and the National Trust. Sheen Common) for over 100 years. The London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames (LBRUT) council maintained green is found behind the cricket pavilion and adjacent to the tennis courts. The bowling club has a kitchen/meeting room and two locker/wc rooms in the pavilion. Over recent years the club membership has fallen considerably but now we are hoping to make a serious effort to get more people taking up lawn bowls and making full use of this local facility situated in a lovely tranquil, sunny spot on the common. Facilities The bowling green is large enough to allow for six rinks which is comfortably adequate for current usage. We have three rooms, within the pavilion, that face on to the green. There is a meeting room with tables and chairs for 15-20 people which has a kitchen with sink, hot water heater and a fridge. Ideal for preparing drinks and snacks. The toilet, changing and storage facilities are situated in our separate male and female locker rooms. Bowling equipment A brand new set of lawn bowls are fairly expensive but the club has bowls that can be borrowed for taster sessions or in the early days of playing regularly. Otherwise all you need are a pair of shoes or trainers with shallow tread or ideally flat soles. Getting started All standards from beginner upwards are very welcome to join us at SCBC to play and be involved in getting the club back on it’s feet and to benefit from the fresh air, relaxation and friendships that are all part of playing lawn bowls. So whether you want to play on a regular basis with other club members or perhaps less frequently as a friends group please come and have a trial. Foxes roam the area particularly at night but also occasionally during the day and Badgers forage on the Common at night, and use it as a route to the adjacent gardens, though as far as is known there are no setts on the Common. There are a number of species of bat to be found feeding on and around the Common, in particular the Common and Soprano Pippistrelles, though we do not know whether they roost there.
